NCAA announces problems with Miami investigation

(AP) ? The NCAA's probe of Miami's athletic compliance practices is ramping up again.

Only this time, the Hurricanes aren't exactly the subject of the inquiry.

In a bizarre twist, the college sports' governing body is being investigated after NCAA President Mark Emmert acknowledged on Wednesday "a very severe issue of improper conduct" by former investigators working the long, complex Miami case.

The NCAA said its investigation was based, at least in part, on information that it should not have had access to, the testimony of those who appeared under subpoena to be deposed in the bankruptcy case involving former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro, one of the most notorious Ponzi scheme architects in history.

The NCAA does not have subpoena power. Shapiro's attorney did, and used it ? and apparently entered into some sort of contractual agreement with the NCAA, one that apparently either was not or should never have been approved.

"We cannot have the NCAA bringing forward an allegation ... that was collected by processes none of us could stand for," Emmert said. "We're going to move it as fast as possible, but we have to get this right."

Speaking Thursday from Providence, R.I. in a telephone interview, Shapiro's attorney, Maria Elena Perez, told The Associated Press that she has done nothing wrong.

"The dubious party is not me. What I have done is 150 percent above board," Perez said.

Perez said she could not divulge the nature of whatever her contract status with the NCAA, though said she is planning to release a statement in the coming days after meeting with her own attorney.

"I am a victim of the enforcement staff," said Perez, who is a Miami graduate. "Me."

The revelations Wednesday mean the notice of allegations against Miami ? the NCAA's findings of wrongdoing, a document that was nearly completed and was expected to be released by the end of this week ? will be delayed for at least a few more weeks, if not longer. The long-term ramifications could be more damning for the NCAA, especially if the outside investigator they have commissioned to look into the mess finds more problems.

"As we have done since the beginning, we will continue to work with the NCAA and now with their outside investigator hoping for a swift resolution of the investigation and our case," Miami President Donna Shalala said.

Emmert said two depositions are involved in this allegation of improper conduct by former enforcement-office staffers. One of those two depositions was given Dec. 19, 2011, by former Miami equipment-room staffer Sean Allen ? who has been linked to Shapiro and many of the allegations that he made against the university.

Among the questions Allen was asked in that deposition:

? "Did you ever witness Mr. Shapiro paying any money to any University of Miami football or basketball players?"

? "Would it be fair to say that Mr. Shapiro did, in fact, confer various financial benefits on the University of Miami Athletic Program and its players?"

? "Did you ever overhear any of the coaches or any other staff for the University of Miami providing Mr. Shapiro with inside information regarding, you know, the condition of any particular athlete for the purposes of Mr. Shapiro's gambling?"

It's unknown which of Allen's answers caught the NCAA investigators' attention.

What is known publicly now, and has been suspected by some for months, is that those investigators never should have known those questions were asked.

"How in the world can you get this far without it being recognized that this was an inappropriate way to proceed?" Emmert asked.

That's the question that the NCAA wants answered, and fast.

Emmert spoke angrily at times during a half-hour conference call to discuss the findings, in which he revealed that he briefed the NCAA's executive committee and the Division I board presidents with some information about the Miami matter. He said he developed a better understanding of what went on in the days that followed, which led to the hiring of Kenneth L. Wainstein of the firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP to conduct the external review of what happened.

Wainstein, Emmert said, will begin his probe on Thursday, with the NCAA hoping that he can finish within two weeks.

"We want to make sure that any evidence that's brought forward is appropriately collected and it has the integrity that we expect and demand," Emmert said.

It was part of a stunning day for Hurricane athletics: The 25th-ranked men's basketball team routed No. 1 Duke later Wednesday, 90-63.

Emmert said the NCAA was trying to find out why part of the investigation was based on depositions specific to the bankruptcy case against Shapiro, who will have to repay $82.7 million to his victims as part of his sentence. And the timing of this also is curious. Several people who were to be named in the NCAA's notice of allegations against Miami have been told that the document was in the final stages of preparation ? and one person who spoke with the AP said at least one person who was to face a charge of wrongdoing was told the letter was scheduled for delivery to Miami on Tuesday.

Now it's anyone's guess when that will happen.

Emmert said the NCAA learned of the alleged misconduct, in part, through legal bills presented by Shapiro's attorney for work that was not properly approved by the organization's general counsel's office.

"One of the questions that has to be answered, unequivocally, is what was the nature of that contractual arrangement and what was all the activity that that individual was involved with," Emmert said. "There is some uncertainty about all of that and it's one of the first orders of business for the firm that we've hired to investigate."

The Hurricanes' athletic compliance practices have been probed by the NCAA for nearly two years. Allegations of wrongdoing involving Miami's football and men's basketball programs became widely known in August 2011 when Yahoo Sports published accusations brought by Shapiro, who is serving a 20-year term in federal prison for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Miami has self-imposed two football postseason bans in response to the investigation. The Hurricanes also would have played in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game this past season, meaning they could have qualified for the Orange Bowl.

"In my two-and-a-half years I've certainly never seen anything like this, and don't want to see it again," Emmert said.

Beyonce's anthem: Big scandal or no big deal?

Beyonce performs the national anthem during the public ceremonial inauguration for President Barack Obama on Monday.

By Sean Daly, TODAY contributor

Beyonce, one of pop music's most beloved stars, is accused of lip-synching and America is fuming.?

Social media exploded Tuesday as outraged fans blasted the Grammy winner over allegations that she mouthed along to a pre-recorded version of ?The Star Spangled Banner? during the Presidential Inauguration.

"It proves that she is not an authentic artist," Ave Maria Pospieck-Schnerr of Philadelphia wrote on TODAY's official Facebook page.? "She can't sing on que [sic] live and sound perfect ... proves that she duped the many people watching who thought she was singing live and it proves she is a phony."

The sudden controversy -- which comes just two weeks before a scheduled performance at the Super Bowl -- has many concerned fans wondering if the singer will be able to recover from the public relations nightmare, while others are simply asking ?what?s the big deal?"

"I guess it all boils down to the fact that lip-synching is, bottom line, a form of fakery," says Robert Thompson, a professor of popular culture at Syracuse University.?"If you watch it, you are supposed to think this person is really singing -- and in fact she is simply moving her lips. Lip-synching, for whatever reason, is one of those things that everyone sinks their teeth into -- even though everyone knows it occurs in some very respected venues."

Lip-synching is somewhat of a time honored tradition that dates back to the days of variety television in the 1960s. Almost no one sang live on shows like "American Bandstand" and "Solid Gold." Today, it is still common for acts to "sing" over pre-recorded tracks -- especially at large live events where acoustics can be challenging to control.

The inauguration is one such event, and given its pageantry there is little room for error; recording as much as possible ahead of time ensures a smooth performance with a predictable outcome. At such an event the bar for integrity is also higher though, and Thompson contends it was maintained.

"If Beyonce had been lip-synching to somebody else?s voice -- or her own voice from 10 years ago -- that would be one thing," Thompson tells TODAY.com.?"But she was lip-synching to her own voice in a recording that was [reportedly] made on Sunday ...?Beyonce should be able to lip-synch to something she recorded 24 hours earlier."?

Still, there will always be envious onlookers -- especially online -- who will seize any opportunity to point out a celebrity?s flaws.

"Beyonce is such an admired and therefore envied figure," says psychiatrist and frequent TODAY contributor Dr. Gail Saltz.?"She is beautiful, talented, wealthy, famous. She has everything that people want. And in this world, the bigger you are, the more people want to see you fall hard."

Saltz attributes some of the vitriol with the abundance of social media outlets that offer a way of expressing it.

"Social media allows people who are angrier, vengeful and want to be able to say negative things to have their voice," Saltz says.? "We tend to hear more from people with negative comments online because they can hide behind the screen."

So far, the singer?s camp is not offering any official statement or insight about the performance. But the singer has proudly posted a?slew of photos from the event on her Tumblr account that seem to show her rehearsing for Monday?s event.

Late Tuesday, a Marine Corps spokesperson issued a statement saying that since the singer was unable to secure rehearsal time with the band, it was determined she would perform to a pre-recorded track. "Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter's vocal performance," the statement said, "no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded."

Regardless of the outrage or the support for the singer, it looks like that as far as this controversy goes, Beyonce will have the last word.

Pioneer intros Platinum Edition CDJ-2000nexus, matching mixer and remixer

Pioneer intros Platinum Edition CDJ2000nexus, equally flashy mixer and remix station

DJs and even nightclubs don't always get to choose the decks for gigs or studio sessions. In the event they do, however, they'll likely want a rig to remember -- and Pioneer is more than willing to sate that desire with new Platinum Editions of the CDJ-2000nexus CD turntable, DJM-900nexus mixer and RMX-1000 Remix Station. All three are similar to existing equipment on the inside, but come with an extra-reflective chrome finish that's bound to be noticed, if more by the DJ than the audience on the dance floor. They'll also be harder to find when they're shipping in limited quantities from the outset; the mirror-like treatment is coming to just 4,000 units of the CDJ-2000nexus, and 2,000 each of the DJM-900nexus and RMX-1000. Scratch artists looking for full-on flash will need to buy two turntables and a mixer together as part of a $8,499 Platinum Edition set due in February, although those wanting a small taste of the experience can buy the remixer by itself for $1,199.

Leigh Weingus: 'The Mindy Project' Season 1, Episode 11 Recap: 'Hooking Up Is Hard'

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 1, Episode 11 of Fox's "The Mindy Project," titled Hooking Up Is Hard.

Fresh off the heels of a bad breakup (here's looking at you, Josh), Mindy finds out that people in her universe are having casual sex. Naturally, she finds it unfair that she herself is not having casual sex and embarks upon a casual sex journey.

Enter Brendan The Midwife. Brendan The Midwife has nothing in common with Mindy, but he's attractive enough, so Mindy asks him he wants to hang out sometime. And by hang out, she means "hang out."

Meanwhile, Danny and Eye Patch girl -- otherwise known as Jillian (Allison Williams), the girl he met at the ER last episode -- are still going strong. Well ... sort of. After stopping by the office only to be met by Mindy who tells her she's a knockout, even with one eye, Jillian clues Danny in on their itinerary for the evening. In case you were wondering, she made dinner reservation for 11 p.m.

Still on her conquest, Mindy shows up at Brendan The Midwife's holistic apartment dressed in a little black dress. After having a terrifying run-in with his shower (it talks) and knocking his contact out of his eye while trying to undress him, Brendan's fellow midwife and roomie Duncan comes home with Morgan, who's secretly been hanging out with him during off hours.

If you were hoping for a happy ending for Mindy, I'm afraid it didn't happen in "Hooking Up Is Hard." Mindy decided Brendan The Midwife was a lame, weird hippie who she'd rather not sleep with, and Morgan suffered an asthma attack leading Mindy to spend even more time with him. Talk about a bad break!

But it wasn't all bad news. After a romantic evening that involved a play where the actors came into the audience, Danny admitted that he was 38, a whopping six years older than Jillian had thought he was. Still, she's kinda into it. Could everyone's favorite grumpy doctor finally have some companionship in sight?!

And now, a few dialogue highlights from Episode 11 of "The Mindy Project."

Arguably offensive lines:

Mindy, on the life she imagined for herself: "My plan was to marry rich and then stop working. Or marry old, and then when they guy died inherit all his money. But all old guys think I have sass mouth."

Mindy to Jillian: "Can I just say, even though you only have one eye, you are so pretty."

Mindy to Danny, about Jillian: "She looks like she could be my daughter, and I look like I could be your daughter!"

Cringe-inducing lines:

Mindy, when she finds out Jeremy is having casual sex: "People seem to be having, like, these awesome sex lives and I'm just trying to find a life partner to go apple picking with. What's wrong with me?"

Betsy to Mindy: "Don't worry, Doctor L, you and I are in the 'No One Night Stands' Club together. Maybe Saturday night you and I can meet up and make our lunches for the week."

Gwen, on Mindy's upcoming hookup with Brendan: "The last time she tried this was in college and she got so freaked out that she pulled the fire alarm at the Hillel house."

Mindy, when Alex suggests she shouldn't wear underwear: "OK, I have never not worn underwear. I wear underwear under my bathing suits."

Brendan to Mindy, when she knocks his contact out of his eye: "Contacts are disposable. This night is not."

Morgan, after recovering from his asthma attack: "This doc just saved my life and did the best magic I've ever seen, so if you want me to look the other way while you do him, I can wait."

Out of context and amazing one-liners:

"I figure if I'm wearing this, murderers will think I'm a murderer and go, 'Eh. Too many cooks in the kitchen.'"

"Can you please tell me about Danny's apartment? In my mind it's like a smoky speakeasy where old men go to complain about technology."

"It might be a bad idea, but sometimes you need to experience the outcome of a bad idea. Like you and train tracks."

"You have a weird, lame shower, this movie sucks, and this conversation? I'm getting nothing from it."

"Why do you have a mannequin head and 'Bossypants' in here?'"

"You can't just wave a dream catcher at a respiratory condition."

"Damn it, Eye Patch! You look prettier than you did before!"

"I"m just trying to figure out how many Olympics you've been around for."

"The Mindy Project" airs on Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. EST on Fox.

Did or didn't she? Beyonce questioned on lip sync

WASHINGTON (AP) ? There's no question Beyonce's rendition of the national anthem was a roaring success. The mystery: was it live or lip synced?

On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Marine Band told news outlets that Beyonce had lip synced at President Barack Obama's inauguration. Master Sgt. Kristin duBois said the band was notified at the last minute that Beyonce would use a pre-recorded voice track.

But by late afternoon, the Marine Corps backed off that statement.

Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Gregory Wolf said that because there was no opportunity for Beyonce to rehearse with the Marine Band, it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill advised. Instead they used a pre-recorded track for the band's portion of the song.

"Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter's vocal performance," Wolf's statement continued, "no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded."

A representative for Beyonce did not respond to requests for comment.

DuBois declined to answer further questions. Earlier in the day, she told The New York Times that the rest of the inaugural performance was live and they did not know why a recorded track was used for the national anthem.

"It's not because Beyonce can't sing. We all know Beyonce can sing. We all know the Marine Band can play," she said.

Kelly Clarkson's representative said she sang live to perform "My Country, 'Tis of Thee."

Inaugural organizers did not respond to requests for comment.

All inaugural music is pre-recorded in case weather conditions or other circumstances could interrupt the program.

The use of a recording is typical in big events. In 2009, cellist Yo-Yo Ma was questioned about "hand-syncing" for Obama's first inauguration. Ma said instruments weren't functioning properly in 19-degree weather.

Even in good conditions, producing good sound can be a challenge in a large open space.

Some artists choose to lip-sync. Whitney Houston's memorable performance of the national anthem in 1991 at the Super Bowl was sung to a track.

Plenty of people, but smaller turnout than expected at inauguration

Gloved individuals donning ski hats and carrying blankets and bags of snacks huddled together at the Silver Spring metro at 5:45 a.m. Monday morning. They were beginning a potentially crowded and arduous trip into the District to attend President Barack Obama's inaugural.

But as the metro car pulled up, it was nearly empty. Everyone got a seat. Some people took two. The car was barely filled by the time riders disembarked at Union Station and Judiciary Square, key inauguration stops.

The District Monday morning had so far drawn nowhere near the number of guests that descended upon the city in 2009. According to anecdotes, streets near the White House were busy at 6 a.m., but very walkable.

Groups of ticket holders near the White House calmly waited in designated corners.

Those scenes seemed to validate the District of Columbia's decision Monday to lower projected turnout estimates from 600,000-800,000 to between 500,000 and 700,000, according to the Associated Press.

An estimated 1.8 million people stood on the National Mall in 2009 to watch the president's historic swearing-in.

The Lavender Languages Conference, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year at American University in Washington, D.C., has grown to be North America's longest-running academic conference with a queer focus.

As it has blossomed into a three-day affair attracting scholars from as far away as Singapore, South Africa, Russia, Poland, and Japan, the conference also mirrors sea changes in queer studies, says William Leap, a professor in American University's College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Anthropology and founder and organizer of the Lavender Languages Conference.

The conference, which runs this year from February 15?, is expected to draw up to 150 registrants and many other audience members. The event that attracted 18 presentations its first year; this time will have more than 80 papers.

Sessions will cover a wide variety of topics, among them neoliberal homophobia, varieties of speech in the drag speech community, the LGBTQ reclaiming of slurs, pornography, language use of transgendered men, sex and violence, and language and queer online communities.

Visual artist 2Fik will also present a performance, cosponsored by the American University's Arab Studies Program and the university's Center for Diversity and Inclusion, on fighting society's labels.

Secret to Conference's Longevity

So is the conference's founder surprised by the event's longevity?

"It's surprising in this sense," Leap says. "Lesbian-gay studies has evolved into queer studies, sexuality studies. It's diversified in ways we didn't expect when all this work started in the '90s. Many academic conferences, many academic programs, many presses with prestigious publications serieseven in queer studiesno longer exist. "It doesn't surprise me because we continue to get interest from rank-and-file students, from faculty, and from community persons who are interested in what the conference does."

Conferees are attracted to the event's "no-attitude" policy, meaning the conference addresses issues important to queer people in their daily lives, and people come to the conference to be part of that discussion, Leap says.

That openness makes it okay for undergraduates to approach experts in anthropology and linguistics and for graduate students to discuss their dissertations and educational opportunities.

The conference has also thrived because Leap strives to keep the costs down. Registration, for example, is administered by volunteers on the conference site.

Conference Inspires Scholarly Publications

Many edited collections and books important in the field have come out of the conference, and many others have arisen in response to work at the annual event.

So has a new international publication, the Journal of Language and Sexuality, whose editorial office is located in AU's Department of Anthropology. About half the people on the editorial board have been part of the conference in previous years, and several of the articles in the journal's first issues have resulted from recent conferences.

"When we started there was no queer linguistics," Leap says. "Studies of language and sexuality were barely recognized as a mode of inquiry. The conference has not been the only force, but the conference has been very active in creating a presence of interest in sexual sameness in linguistics. I'm very proud of that, and of the numbers of publications that have come out of the conference, the numbers of scholars who cut their teeth in this work in the context of Lavender and have gone on to do big things, some of whom are plenary speakers.

"It's certainly been the focal point in work I've done in lavender language, gay language, queer linguistics, since that time," Leap reflects. "It's a major part of our department's commitment to public anthropology to outreaching to constituencies and involving them in the centerpiece of whatever kind of anthropological work unfolds."

U.S. gives tribute to memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

ATLANTA (Reuters) - America's concern over gun violence became the focus of speeches in Atlanta on Monday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who led a non-violent struggle for civil rights before he was gunned down at age 39.

Crowds gathered at commemorative services across the country on the national holiday in King's honor, the same day as President Barack Obama's second inauguration ceremonies and little more than a month after the Connecticut mass shooting that touched off a national outcry over gun control.

In a ceremony in King's hometown of Atlanta, his daughter Bernice King spoke at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was once a pastor. She recalled her father's reaction after their family home in Montgomery, Alabama, was bombed in 1956 during a boycott of the local bus system.

Some black residents of the city were "armed that day, ready to protect their homes," but King urged them to put away their guns, Bernice King said.

"This apostle of nonviolence perhaps introduced one of the greatest experiences of gun control that we've ever heard of in the history of our nation," said Bernice King, who is chief executive of the King Center in Atlanta.

An assassin's bullet ended King's life on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, human rights activist Elisabeth Omilami reminded the crowd at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

"Dr. King was a victim of gun violence," said Omilami, daughter of Hosea Williams, one of King's lieutenants in the civil rights movement.

The church crowd gathered before a giant screen to witness the inauguration ceremony in Washington and hear Obama's speech which touched on King's "I Have a Dream" speech delivered 50 years ago in Washington.

Obama last week proposed a package of measures intended to reduce gun violence following the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting that killed 20 first grade students and six staff members.

In his speech on Monday, Obama recalled King's dream for freedom for all Americans, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or geographic or economic status.

"Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm," said Obama, who used a Bible that belonged to King at his swearing-in ceremony.

King's father, Reverend Martin Luther King Sr., also was a pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church. It sits on Atlanta's historic Auburn Avenue near the King Center, established in 1968 by the slain activist's widow Coretta Scott King, who died in 2006. On the avenue not far from the church is King's grandparents' home, where he was born in 1929.

King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Nearly a million people visit the King Center each year, viewing an eternal flame honoring King and crypts holding the remains of King and his wife and attending an array of programs promoting non-violent social change.

Around the country, where Martin Luther King Day has been a federal holiday since 1986, banks, financial markets and government offices were closed.

A march along Auburn Avenue was set for later in the day, and a rally to address such issues as education, housing, peace, justice and voter registration, organizers said.

Also planned was a Day of Service, with an array of community service projects in Atlanta in honor of King.

Eagles talk about new Showtime documentary

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? The Eagles picked the producer of their new Showtime documentary "The History of the Eagles" ? but they insist that's about all the control they had in the making of it.

"It's really not a film that represents our point of view so much," Glen Frey said Saturday as the quartet spoke at the Sundance Film Festival hours before the film's premiere.

The film was directed by Alison Ellwood and produced by Alex Gibney, whose other documentaries include the Academy Award-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side" and "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room."

"The History of the Eagles" will be shown in two parts on Showtime Feb. 15-16. It includes 40-year-old footage that was in the band's archives, as well as recent interviews with the band.

Henley said he was interested in someone making a documentary about the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers but was unimpressed with recent music documentaries. So, he asked to see the work of Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers and was led to Gibney.

From there, he worked to convince Gibney that he should tell the band's story, and they had "zero" influence on its outcome.

"We have a good story to tell and I think he's a great storyteller," Frey said, adding that Gibney told him, "We're going to make a movie, and we're going to tell the truth."

Don Henley said the band hasn't even seen the final cut yet. "I hope we like it," he joked.

Frey said what surprised him most about the film, and seeing the old footage, was "how much fun we had."

That may surprise people who are familiar with the band's well-documented discord, including their acrimonious breakup in 1982 (they got back together in 1994).

"Most of the things that have been written about this band have focused on conflict ? the journalism of conflict," Henley said. "It sells papers and magazines, but one thing that Glen said that people will see in this documentary is that we had a lot of fun. Some of it's not on film, and that's good."

"The bitter fighting that the media loved to talk about really didn't take place. We argued a lot, we discussed stuff a lot, and that tension had a lot of to do with the creative process," Walsh said. "We didn't hate each other; we didn't have fist fights, none of that."

Walsh, Henley, Frey and Timothy Schmit were expected to attend the premiere later Saturday.

Frey said the band might eventually make new music together. Their last album together was 2007's "Long Road Out of Eden."

"I think what we realized is how good we are together and how things have changed, and it would be a shame if we didn't try to find a way to create some more new music," Frey said. "People really like to hear us sing, we really do well, we still perform at a very high level, so for me, it would be great."

Top Ten Reasons Why Writers Should Join Toastmasters: #3 ...

Frances Watts author talk

When you first join Toastmasters, you will receive the Competent Communication manual which helps you learn the basic skills of creating and delivering a speech. What many new Toastmasters don?t realize is that their member initiation fee also includes their first two advanced manuals. They are ordered by the Vice President of Education when he or she enters the information for your Competent Communicator award.

There are 15 advanced manuals to choose from, and a number of them are perfect for writers.

Nonfiction writers will love the Speaking to Inform manual which will help them learn how to effectively communicate their ideas in a workshop or speech setting.

If you provide group consultations, coaching, or if workshops are a marketing tool that you want to use, then the Facilitating Discussions manual will also interest you.

Any writer will enjoy working in the Storytelling and Interpretive Reading manuals.

Do you want to improve your video marketing skills? Try the Communicating on Video manual to learn how to present an editorial, appear as a guest on an interview program, be the host of an interview program, conduct a press conference and use?video to train.

If you?d like an overview of several different types of speeches, try the Specialty Speeches manual and learn about impromptu talks, preparing inspirational speeches, selling a product, reading out loud, and introducing a speaker.

Here?s one that is chock full of marketing advice: The Persuasive Speaker. In it you?ll learn about selling a product, making ?cold calls,? preparing a winning proposal, convincing an audience to at least consider your side of a controversial issue or subject and persuading listeners to help bring a vision and mission to reality.

If you?re thinking of branching into keynotes or motivational speaking, you might want to check The Professional Speaker manual.

These are just the manuals that I thought would interest writers, but there are several more, including The Entertaining Speaker, Public Relations, Speeches by Management, Technical Presentations, Special Occasion Speeches, Humorously Speaking, and Interpersonal Communication.

There?s a lot to explore and learn in the Advanced Communication series. I hope you?ll find a Toastmasters club in your area and get started building speaking skills to promote your writing and services.

U.S. Air Force finds pornography, "offensive" material in inspections

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - The U.S. Air Force, reeling from a scandal over sexual abuse of female recruits, said on Friday a search of its facilities across the globe turned up tens of thousands of items it considered to be "offensive, inappropriate or pornographic."

The inspections of public areas on Air Force facilities over 12 days in December were aimed at heightening awareness among personnel about sexual violence and professionalism in the workplace, said Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh.

"I talked with airmen across the force and believe that some units were not meeting those standards," he said. "Every airman deserves to be treated with respect. They also deserve to work in a professional environment."

The Air Force was rocked last year by revelations that female recruits were sexually abused at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Eleven instructors at the base, the home of all Air Force basic military training, have been charged with offenses ranging from inappropriate behavior to sexual assault.

The Air Force has said that 48 women have come forward with what investigators consider credible stories of sexual misconduct.

The inspections, which did not include searches of private areas like barracks, found 631 items considered to be pornographic, including videos, posters and magazines. More than 27,000 items were judged "inappropriate or offensive" and ranged from posters to pictures and calendars.

Officials say the inappropriate items - including a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders poster and copies of the men's magazine Maxim - were confiscated or destroyed since the inspected areas are considered to be U.S. government property.

Nancy Parrish, president of Protect Our Defenders, an advocacy group for military personnel who have been sexually assaulted, said many of the inspections were announced ahead of time, potentially allowing time for more offensive items to be moved.

Welsh did not say if any disciplinary action would be taken as a result of the inspections. He said a report on what was found in the searches has been turned over to an Air Force special investigations office.

Choose Netflix UK For TV Shows, Amazon's LOVEFiLM Instant For ...

The ongoing war between rival?on-demand streaming?services as they build out their catalogues to win customers by having the most enticing content means rarely a week goes by without news of another content licensing deal being inked between the streamers and the studios. Earlier this week, for instance, LOVEFiLM signed a streaming deal with NBC Universal?? covering ?hundreds? of TV shows such as?the U.S. version of?The Office?and?30 Rock.?But with all this noise it can be tough to figure out how substantial the catalogues of rival services actually are.

But now we have a little more data thanks to Oric, a U.K. company that offers its own online video service by cataloguing legal sources of content to make is easier for people to find that thing they want to watch online. The company has compiled data on streaming services?Netflix U.K.?(which costs ?5.99 per month)?and Amazon?s LOVEFiLM Instant?(from ?5.89 per month, including its DVD rentals service) ? by building a custom crawler, in the case of LOVEFiLM Instant, that specified all the titles available on the service. The data suggests U.K. Netflix has more to boast about when it comes to its TV listings but LOVEFilm Instant has a more rich and sizeable movie offering.

For Netflix, Oric had to do a lot more leg work to get the data ? manually accessing every genre page and extracting the HTML.?For Netflix pages with more than 40 titles on things got even more painful as it had to manually pull the name and URL of every title from number 41 onwards. Once it had this data it was able to custom crawl the extracted HTML ? manually correcting for season numbers for TV shows and release dates for films. It also had to de-duplicate the data since most titles are in more than one genre. All in all, says Oric, it was a ?mission? ? and doubtless helps to explain why good data on the size of these services? catalogues can be hard to find.

(NB: Oric?s data does not factor in LOVEFiLM?s DVD rentals catalogue ? which runs to more than 70,000 titles ? as it?s only comparing on-demand streaming services.)

U.S. vs U.K. streaming services

The first thing to note is how tiddly both U.K. streaming services are compared to their U.S. equivalents. The?U.S. Netflix has close to six times more streamable titles than U.K. Netflix.?U.S. Netflix has an API which Oric says is used by?Instantwatcher.com to determine the number of titles on Netflix US (Instant). That figure is 14,142 streamable titles (9,153 films and 4,989 TV seasons) ? which compares to a measly?2,593 titles in the UK (1,668 films and 925 TV seasons), according to Oric?s data. In truth, anyone who?s ever?flicked idly through U.K. Netflix?s film collection to try to find something to watch can tell you it?s very thin pickings indeed on the service ? especially if you?re not keen to eyeball a straight-to-DVD-style film.

Comparing the U.K. LOVEFiLM Instant service to Amazon?s Prime Instant Video U.S. service shows another big content discrepancy. Oric calculates that?Amazon.com has 13,185 movies in their Instant Video catalogue that are free to Amazon Prime Members, out of a total of 57,888 movies in their Instant Video catalogue (the rest of the titles are not free, even to Prime members).?They also have?2,204 TV seasons in their Instant Video catalogue that are free to Amazon Prime Members, out of a total of 11,688 TV seasons (again, the rest are pay-to-watch). So that?s 13,185 free-to-members movies on Prime Instant Video and?2,204 free-to-members?TV seasons ? compared to 3,284 movies on LOVEFiLM Instant and 589 TV seasons. Sucks to be a Brit.

Of course, when it comes to online video content, it?s not so much quantity that counts?but quality ? is this a movie or TV show that?s actually worth watching? But that?s obviously a much harder kind of data to scrape. At least the following gives a snapshot of relative catalogue size, and movie content by year, for two competing U.K. on-demand services.

U.K. Netflix vs LOVEFiLM Instant

Turning to Oric?s data on U.K. Netflix vs LOVEFiLM Instant, it?s clear that Netflix wins on quantity of TV show content but LOVEFiLM is substantially better for movies. Oric has calculated that Netflix U.K. has 1,668 films vs 3,284 on LOVEFiLM Instant ? meaning Amazon?s service has a movie catalogue that?s close to double the size of U.K. Netflix?s. There is relatively little catalogue crossover too:?3,015 of LOVEFiLM?s film titles are not on Netflix. And while?Netflix has 1,399 film titles that LOVEFiLM does not have I would wager that many of those titles are of the ?straight-to-DVD? variety mentioned earlier.

On the TV front, the situation swings round and Netflix comes out on top for quantity. Oric calculates that U.K. Netflix has 412 TV titles and 925 entire TV seasons vs LOVEFiLM?s 300 TV titles and 589 TV seasons. Around three-quarters of Netflix?s TV seasons are not found on LOVEFiLM, vs. more than half of LOVEFiLM?s TV seasons not found on Netflix.

netflix vs lovefilm instant

Oric has also calculated the year of movie releases in the two services? catalogues. This shows that the largest proportion of movies found on each service respectively are films released between 2000 and 2009. But LOVEFiLM?s next largest swathe of films are pre-1980s titles ? an area where Netflix is relatively weak: with LOVEFiLM having 777 pre-1980 titles, vs 101 on Netflix. Classic film buffs take note. LOVEFiLM also has substantially more movie releases from the 1990-1999 period than Netflix: 438 vs 293.

Netflix does a little better than LOVEFiLM on relatively recently movie releases, though, with more than double the number of titles released in 2012, and a larger number in 2011.

Great Oxidation Event: More oxygen through multicellularity

Jan. 17, 2013 ? The appearance of free oxygen in Earth's atmosphere led to the Great Oxidation Event. This was triggered by cyanobacteria producing the oxygen which developed into multicellular forms as early as 2.3 billion years ago. As evolutionary biologists from the Universities of Zurich and Gothenburg have shown, this multicellularity was linked to the rise in oxygen and thus played a significant role for life on Earth as it is today.

Cyanobacteria belong to Earth's oldest organisms. They are still present today in oceans and waters and even in hot springs. By producing oxygen and evolving into multicellular forms, they played a key role in the emergence of organisms that breathe oxygen. This has, now, been demonstrated by a team of scientists under the supervision and instruction of evolutionary biologists from the University of Zurich. According to their studies, cyanobacteria developed multicellularity around one billion years earlier than eukaryotes -- cells with one true nucleus. At almost the same time as multicellular cyanobacteria appeared, a process of oxygenation began in the oceans and in Earth's atmosphere.

Multicellularity as early as 2.3 billion years ago

The scientists analyzed the phylogenies of living cyanobacteria and combined their findings with data from fossil records for cyanobacteria. According to the results recorded by Bettina Schirrmeister and her colleagues, multicellular cyanobacteria emerged much earlier than previously assumed. "Multicellularity developed relatively early in the history of cyanobacteria, more than 2.3 billion years ago," Schirrmeister explains in her doctoral thesis, written at the University of Zurich.

Link between multicellularity and the Great Oxidation Event

According to the scientists, multicellularity developed shortly before the rise in levels of free oxygen in the oceans and in the atmosphere. This accumulation of free oxygen is referred to as the Great Oxidation Event, and is seen as the most significant climate event in Earth's history. Based on their data, Schirrmeister and her doctoral supervisor Homayoun Bagheri believe that there is a link between the emergence of multicellularity and the event. According to Bagheri, multicellular life forms often have a more efficient metabolism than unicellular forms. The researchers are thus proposing the theory that the newly developed multicellularity of the cyanobacteria played a role in triggering the Great Oxidation Event.

Cyanobacteria occupied free niches

The increased production of oxygen set Earth's original atmosphere off balance. Because oxygen was poisonous for large numbers of anaerobic organisms, many anaerobic types of bacteria were eliminated, opening up ecological 'niches'. The researchers have determined the existence of many new types of multicellular cyanobacteria subsequent to the fundamental climatic event, and are deducing that these occupied the newly developed habitats. "Morphological changes in microorganisms such as bacteria were able to impact the environment fundamentally and to an extent scarcely imaginable," concludes Schirrmeister.
