Regarding HP's supply chain, Whitman told CNBC, "We don't think about our supply chain holistically, from designing in a way to limit the cost," reiterating her comments on the conference call that HP needs to "remove unnecessary complexity from the way we design, manufacture, and deliver products."

In other words, HP needs to focus on simpler and better industrial design, as well as working on incorporating that approach into honing its supply chain -- both of which are skills that Apple has down pat.

?Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California,?and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.? The Constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort.?

The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) is the sole sponsor of the Perry case.

The request for a larger eleven-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit to reconsider the case, known as rehearing en banc, is only granted upon a majority vote of the Ninth Circuit?s 25 judges in regular active service.? A petition for rehearing en banc temporarily stays the three-judge panel?s decision striking down Proposition 8.

Proponents? also renewed their baseless attempt to impugn the reputation of the United States District Chief Judge who struck down Proposition 8. ?Unable to defend Proposition 8 on its merits, Proponents claim that the now-retired Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker was disqualified from ruling on Proposition 8 and that his historic decision should be vacated because he is gay and in a committed relationship.? The Ninth Circuit unanimously rejected Proponents? offensive argument, stating: ?To do otherwise would demonstrate a lack of respect for the integrity of our federal courts.?

?We are ready to defend our victory whatever path this case takes,? said Plaintiffs? attorney Theodore J. Live from New York, it's Lindsay Lohan! The embattled actress will host "Saturday Night Live" on March 3, the show has confirmed. This will be the fourth time she takes the "SNL" stage, where she'll be joined by musical guest Jack White. In a statement to CNN, her rep said, "Lindsay is very much looking forward to hosting SNL and working with the incredible cast, crew and writers to put on a memorable show."

Her probation restrictions are lifted in March, just in time for her to host. Meanwhile sources tell TMZ that Lohan called up "SNL" head honcho, Lorne Michaels, asking if she could host an episode this season. After several conversations, Michaels and Lohan settled on the March date.

The source adds that Lohan has always loved hosting the show and looks to Michaels as a father figure.

Since Lohan first hosted "SNL" back in 2004 at the tender age of 17, the actress has been through quite a lot, including multiple court appearances and several jail stints. In the years since, she's had a hard time reigniting her once-thriving movie career. Most recently she was attached to a Linda Lovelace biopic, but she eventually lost the role. She last hosted "SNL" in 2006.

While Lohan has had a hard time booking movie gigs, she did make headlines when she appeared in Playboy in December. In the issue, the actress opened up about her public woes.

"Looking back, I probably would have listened to and taken more advice from the people whom I admire and would have followed through with it more," she said. "My stubbornness at 18 and 19 years old got in the way. During the past five years, I've learned that time flies faster than you think, and because you only live once, you have to learn from your mistakes, live your dreams and be accountable."

Josh Silver: Citizens United Revisited? Buckle Up, Chief Justice Roberts

On Friday night, the U.S. Supreme Court?blocked?the Montana Supreme Court's December, 2011 decision upholding the state's century-old ban on corporate political spending. The implications of this are huge, as it paves the way for a potential re-opening of the disastrous Citizens United decision that has spawned billionaire-sponsored super PACs. And if that happens, Chief Justice John Roberts better buckle up for a grassroots mobilization unlike any the court has seen in years.

Friday's decision was in response to a request by the American Tradition Partnership (ATP) to reverse the Montana ruling. ATP -- a conservative group that that says it fights "the radical environmentalist agenda" -- has six weeks to formally ask the Supreme Court to review the case. If they don't, the Montana ban on corporate spending will stand.

Since the Citizens United ruling over two years ago, millions of dollars have flowed from the super-rich and corporations to elect or defeat candidates. A handful of billionaires have manipulated election outcomes in a matter of days, buying vicious ads through super PACs that candidates pretend are independent from their own campaigns -- while their former colleagues and pals run those PACs. As Ari Berman reported in Huffington Post, some 196 individual donors have provided nearly 80% of the money raised by super PACs in 2011 by giving $100,000 or more each. Secret donors using 501C4's have purchased 40% of total GOP primary ads with no disclosure of who is signing the checks.

The Supreme Court justified Citizens United by ruling that super PACs do not allow corruption or the appearance of corruption. Webster's dictionary defines corruption: "Impairment of integrity, virtue, or moral principle, inducement to wrong by improper or unlawful means (as bribery); a departure from the original or from what is pure or correct."

If our current campaign finance system isn't corrupt, what is? A handful of billionaires can decide who the next president will be. If our Supreme Court doesn't find that corrupt, or at least creating the appearance of corruption, then they are using a very different dictionary than the rest of America; one shape-shifted solely to consolidate power into the hands of the super-rich, the rest of us be damned.

From Occupy on the left to the Tea Party on the right, conservatives and liberals agree that crony capitalism is out of control, and is central to our nations myriad problems: banking, energy, jobs, health care...you name it. The people are mad as hell, and they're not going to take it any more.

And if the court takes up Citizens United again, you can be sure the American people won't sit quietly with their hands folded while the high court deliberates. They're going to shake the bars of the prison that our democracy has become, and demand a ruling that protects ordinary people, not plutocrats.

The General Overview

The world of Leu Chrysallia is something of a bizarre world in a broad sense-little of it is truly defined beyond some basic concepts of it. The world as a whole is a montage of fantasy and odd levels of technology. The levels of technology that exist in the world vary, greatly. There is a high enough level of technology to creat a functioning cyborg, but the problem is that this technology is not completely understood, while it is of a higher level than what exists here, there are few who even know of its existence yet. And those who even do don't understand how it functions. So it would be more hush-hush and secret then availible to the general population. The ability to create machines and cyborgs exist, but it wouldn't be entirely understood yet.

To the rest of the world, the level of tech that exists is very different from this though, while there is electricity, how people live varies by location and economic class. The rich have better homes and more access to better ways of living, so they can afford things like radio and such, which would be the prime way of receiving news and at-home entertainment at this point in time, so no television. But . . . since the poor makes up the majority of the population, radio and such is not a very widespread aspect of life yet, some people live in the dark, and transportation is more horse and carriage than anything else. There are no things like cell phones, there are landline phones for those who can afford it, but far and few of those.

Magic is still very much a real thing, since most of the world lives in rather terrible conditions, many people still use spells and things like alchemy as a part of daily living. Swords and such are pretty common, and there are guns, but they are equal to stuff you would find in the mid-1800's. People's use of either depends entirely upon personal preference.

Most people aren't aware of the advanced tech that exists yet, just a few people, like those who rule over countries and such.

As for how people live, there are villages and larger cities, but those cities are more like what you find in the heyday of the Industrial Revolution at best, the rich live in good conditions while the majority of the city suffers. It's common, and the world outside of most cities is pretty scary, conditions are going downhill fast and everything is degrading.

The Races of Leu Chrysallia

There is a variety of peoples who exist in the world, far more than simple humans. There are many sentient races, and it is not uncommon for them to intermingle, yet at the same time it is also very common that the live apart from one another, existing separately.

Creatures of magic exist as well the many races which exist in this world are; humans, light elves, dark elves, dwarves, orcs, green goblins, black goblins, vampires, shapeshifters, wizards, witches, salamanders, undines, sylphs, gnomes, merpeople, fae, and orcs.

Also, a number of people who blur the lines between the fullblooded races, having been born to parents of different bloods. Commonly, they are refered to as 'Halflings.' There are some formal titles for Halfling races though when they are rather common, such as 'Dhampir' because it is not at all unusual to meet a person who bears the blood of a vampire and the blood of another humanoid race in their veins.

The Goddess Sevda

The legends and mythos surrounding the Goddess Sevda run deep into the world and into all cultures. The Goddess was said to have created all life, all of the races and shared with them her blessings and power at the beginning of the world. Yet, the imperfections of mortals would be her undoing, as the jealousy sparked in their hearts for the Goddess' attention weakened Sevda until she could no longer maintain the world as it was, as an Eden. To sustain herself and the world at all, she was said to enter a state of sleep, of which she would one day awaken from.

How she would awaken or when was never told, yet there was a firm belief in people that their beloved mother would rouse someday soon and restore the world to what it once was. . . . In recent times though, belief in the Goddess and this story has greatly waned, it is hard to believe in a benevolent figure in a world where it is hard to get by and the enviroment itself seems to on the verge of death.

Ecuador defamation case in final hearing (AP)

QUITO, Ecuador ? Ecuador's highest court on Wednesday heard the final appeal in a criminal libel case filed by President Rafael Correa in which three executives and a columnist of the opposition newspaper El Universo were each sentenced to three years in prison.

The defendants were also appealing awards totaling $42 million that they said represented an effort by Correa to bankrupt the paper.

Two of them, Nicolas and Cesar Perez, said from Miami that they fled there fearing for their personal safety.

The columnist, Emilio Palacio, announced last week he is seeking political asylum in the United States. He has called the trial a farce and suggested Correa had unduly influenced the judiciary to get the desired verdict.

Rights groups have decried the case as part of a concerted campaign by Correa to stifle free speech and silence his critics.

Correa attended Wednesday's hearing, which lasted 13 1/2 hours before the three judges began deliberations. It was not clear when they might issue a verdict.

In a news conference he held Wednesday inside the courtroom, Correa called the case "a trial by fire for the justice system" and suggested it could set a regional precedent. Correa's leftist allies in Latin America, chiefly President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, have also often wrestled with aggressive opposition media.

Corea also called for his followers outside to remain vigilant so that "definitive justice is done today." With a 70 percent approval rating, Correa is among Latin America's most popular leaders thanks in part to an array of state-funded programs that have brought stability to a traditionally unruly nation.

Correa's backers scuffled with defenders of El Universo outside the courthouse on Wednesday morning.

The president's supporters struck at least three journalists and burned issues of El Universo and another newspaper, El Comercio.

Correa says he is only defending himself against false accusations in a column by Palacio published by El Universo.

The column repeatedly referred to Correa as "the Dictator" and said he "ordered discretionary fire ? without prior notification ? against a hospital full of civilians and innocent people" during a Sept. 30, 2010, police revolt over government plans to cut police benefits that claimed at least five lives.

The press freedom director of the Inter-American Press Association, Ricardo Trotti, said Wednesday at Miami at a news conference with Nicolas and Cesar Perez that the sentence appealed was "completely repressive and disproportionate."

The Perezes, brothers who are the paper's deputy director and manager of new media, said they were considering seeking political asylum in the United States but had not yet decided.

Carlos Perez, a third brother who is El Universo's director, remained in Ecuador, they said.

The El Universo directors and columnist are not the only journalists Correa has attacked in the courts.

Last week, a judge ordered two journalists to pay $1 million each to the president or offending Correa's "honor" and "professional prestige" by claiming he was aware that his older brother had some $600 million in government countracts, primarily for road construction.

Correa has also succeeded in winning through a ballot question last year a constitutional provision restricting news media ownership and creating a government oversight panel that would regulate news media content for "excesses."

And he further angered press freedom advocates by winning congressional approval of a law that bars the news media from broadcasting or publishing any material that could influence opinions about candidates or proposals during election campaigns.

A Mana Party worker is in hospital with brain damage after an accident which ocurred less than a kilometre from leader Hone Harawira?s home.

Joseph ?Reti? Nathan, 35, of Kaitaia, was driving a Nissan Maxima the wrong way down State Highway 1 near Awanui in Northland when he struck a car coming the other way.

Even though it appears Mr Nathan was at fault, he is also the one most seriously affected, so sympathies go out to his whanau and friends. Serious head injuries can be an awful thing.

Firefighters who freed Nathan had to work around beer bottles scattered through the car. But a blood test taken hours later at hospital returned a negative result.

Empty beer bottles in a car is never a good sign, but it does not mean they were drinking at that particular time.

Members of the Harawira family, who were partying at home ahead of a family wedding, ran to help in the aftermath of the accident.

Harawira said last night that Nathan had not been at his family?s party. ?The guy wasn?t at my house,? Harawira said.

I do wonder where he was, in that remote area. Hopefully he will recover, so he can tell the Police.

Members of a family of five in the other car, a Ford Territory, received moderate injuries.

The mother declined to be named but described the moments leading up to the crash on January 19. ?

?We were driving home and he was on the wrong side of the road and hit us head on. I got taken by helicopter to Whangarei Hospital. I have broken ribs.?

The children are aged 3, 8 and 13.

?All my children have scrapes and scratches and my son has a broken collar bone. They are traumatised over the incident. It was horrific and horrible.?

Again, thank goodness no one was killed.

Should You Convert Your Car to Natural Gas?

Natural gas has been used in our homes for generations. Americans use it to run water heaters, home furnaces, stoves, clothes dryers, and other appliances. As a fuel it accounts for 24 percent of our total energy consumption nationwide, all but 1 percent in residential applications. And as we reported last fall ("Drilling Down," September 2011), new fracking techniques are tapping domestic reserves that previously were not economically viable. Vast global supplies are projected to last well into the next century even if natural gas replaces gasoline completely. So it should be no surprise that natural gas will remain incredibly cheap. It runs at one-half to one-third the current cost of gasoline on an energy-equivalent measure. In a properly tuned engine, natural gas combustion delivers 20 percent lower carbon emissions and about a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gases compared with the cleanest gasoline engines, all without damaging existing catalytic converter systems. So right about now you're probably wondering: Why aren't we putting this stuff in our cars?

As it turns out, there are very few technological barriers to overcome. In fact, converting existing vehicles to burn natural gas isn't particularly challenging. Unfortunately, if you tried to do it yourself, you'd more than likely run afoul of the Clean Air Act's rules against modifying fuel systems--a violation that could cost you up to $5000 in fines for every day you drive the converted vehicle. So if you want to green your wheels today, the only way to do it is by hiring a certified compressed-natural-gas (CNG) installer to do the job. To get the skinny on aftermarket CNG systems, I visited NatGasCar in Cleveland. It's a startup shop that augments gasoline cars by installing a parallel natural gas fuel system. They showed me their latest creation, a dual-fuel Dodge Caravan intended for airport taxi service. It starts on gasoline and switches over to natural gas once the engine warms up.

NatGasCar's biggest component is also its most crucial and expensive--the compressed-natural-gas fuel tank situated behind the rear seats in the cargo area. The company uses a Type 4 tank, the most advanced kind. It reduces weight with a plastic composite core wrapped in carbon fiber and is rated for severe impact and puncture resistance.

Between the tank and the engine is the fuel regulator, which reduces the fuel-tank pressure of 3600 psi to a usable 125 psi delivered to the engine. The fuel regulator is heated to prevent freezing from the expansion of the gas. The lower-pressure gas travels to the engine, Chrysler's flex-fuel-capable Pentastar V-6. A flex-fuel engine is important, since it has hardened valves and valve seats, which are necessary for CNG operation. The natural gas is routed through a parallel fuel rail, and a second set of injectors is plugged into a clever adapter designed to accommodate both the gasoline and CNG injectors on the same injection port. Natural gas runs at an ideal air--fuel ratio of about 16.8:1, whereas gasoline runs happily at 14.6:1 for the Pentastar engine. As a result, the programming for the new injectors has to be slightly different. NatGasCar's wiring harness intercepts the signals from the engine-control module and, depending upon which fuel is selected, turns on either the gasoline or the CNG injectors. The signals bound for the gasoline injectors are modified to deliver the appropriate amount of fuel to the natural gas injectors. This way, very little fine tuning is necessary, and the car's engine-control unit does most of the work.

Fueling Woes

So a new fuel tank and a little bit of tinkering with the fuel injectors and I'm ready to go, right? Unfortunately not. Natural gas is delivered across the country to millions of homes. But what would seem to be the ideal distribution network is actually the biggest headache of natural gas vehicles. Home natural gas is delivered at about 0.5 psi, but natural gas in vehicles needs to be pressurized to 3600 psi. So if you want to use CNG in your car, you'll need a compressor. A National Fire Protection Association safety standard bans compressed gas storage in homes, so a stand-alone multistage compressor pump in the garage must be hooked up to the vehicle's fuel tank, filling it directly. This leads to fueling times of up to 22 hours (even longer than equivalent home charging times for electric vehicles). Honda's Civic Natural Gas is paired with a home compressor system called Phill ($4500), the only commercially available product of its kind. NatGasCar is developing a compressor system capable of 8-hour fill-ups; the current target price is $3500. Some states have incentivized the installation of high-speed filling systems at gas stations, where fill times are as brief as 4 to 5 minutes, much like gasoline's. But these systems cost $750,000 per station to install, and low demand means there are only 941 high-pressure CNG filling stations scattered across the country, mostly in New York, California, Utah, and Texas.

Economics

Okay, okay, it's a pain to fuel CNG vehicles, but is it worth it? Nationwide, natural gas ranges from 79 cents to $1.50 for a gasoline gallon equivalent (gge) of fuel. That's considerable savings over petroleum-based products, especially considering that CNG vehicles get the same or better relative fuel economy per Btu because of the higher octane rating of natural gas. Our test drives indicated no hit to performance, and a perfectly acceptable range of about 250 miles. But there are some pretty extraordinary initial setup costs. A properly installed conversion will run anywhere from $6500 for a basic system to $12,000 for a top-of-the-line installation with a high-capacity, composite fuel tank. If you want a home fueling compressor, tack on another $3500 minimum. Even at the low end, you're looking at spending enough on the conversion to buy more than 1800 gallons of gasoline at today's prices.

Those prices will ultimately determine the fate of CNG vehicles. High gasoline prices historically have caused furious investment in cheaper, cleaner fuels, followed by a collapse in demand when gas prices fall. For now, CNG has a high price of entry that makes it viable only for taxi services and other fleet operators, but over time, economies of scale may bring down the costs for the ordinary car buyer. And if gasoline stays above $3 a gallon, that change may come sooner rather than later.

US, Japan agree to partial Marine transfer from Okinawa: media (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? The United States and Japan have agreed to tweak a six-year-old agreement on Marines based on the southern island of Okinawa, allowing Washington to deploy forces to the Pacific island of Guam regardless of the debate over moving a disputed airbase.

The Guam deployment had been held hostage by a political stalemate in Japan over the shifting of the Futenma base to another site on Okinawa, an issue given added importance in recent years by China's growing military might in the region.

Japanese newspapers said the new plan would allow Washington to shrink the expensive Guam relocation plan at a time when it is under pressure to cut defense spending because of deficit woes even as it turns its attention to China.

Japan and the United States agreed in 2006 to relocate Futenma to a less populated area of Okinawa, a reluctant host to around half of the roughly 50,000 U.S. forces stationed in Japan.

The Futenma relocation was part of a broader realignment of U.S. forces that would shift some 8,000 troops to Guam.

Last June, the two allies agreed to drop their 2014 deadline for the completion of the dual package.

Newspapers said the two countries would make an announcement as early as Feb 13 on a revision of the 2006 agreements, including a transfer in advance of 4,700 U.S. troops, instead of 8,000, to Guam, regardless of the Futenma issue.

U.S.-Japan talks are to start in Washington on Monday. On Friday, both countries said they remained committed to the 2006 Realignment Roadmap.

The revision, however, would lower the visibility of the Futenma debate and could thus present Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda with protest from opposition parties, which control parliament's upper house and can block bills.

The issue of U.S. troops on Okinawa has been a persistent problem for successive Japanese governments.

Many residents of the southern Japanese island associate the U.S. bases with crime, pollution and accidents. Noda's predecessor, Yukio Hatoyama, jolted the alliance when his Democratic Party took power for the first time in 2009 and he sought to stick to a campaign promise to move the Futenma base off the island.

He was forced to resign after failing to find an alternative and both Naoto Kan, who succeeded Hatoyama as premier, and Noda, who took office last September, recommitted Tokyo to the 2006 deal.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The recording was forgotten, and so, too, was the odd twist of history that brought together Malcolm X and a bespectacled Ivy Leaguer fated to become one of America?s top diplomats.

The audiotape of Malcolm X?s 1961 address in Providence might never have surfaced at all if 22-year-old Brown University student Malcolm Burnley hadn?t stumbled across a reference to it in an old student newspaper. He found the recording of the little-remembered visit gathering dust in the university archives.

?No one had listened to this in 50 years,? Burnley told The Associated Press. ?There aren?t many recordings of him before 1962. And this is a unique speech - it?s not like others he had given before.?

In the May 11, 1961, speech delivered to a mostly white audience of students and some residents, Malcolm X combines blistering humor and reason to argue that blacks should not look to integrate into white society but instead must forge their own identities and culture.

At the time, Malcolm X, 35, was a loyal supporter of the black separatist movement Nation of Islam. He would be assassinated four years later after leaving the group and crafting his own more global, spiritual ideology.

The legacy of slavery and racism, he told the crowd of 800, ?has made the 20 million black people in this country a dead people. Dead economically, dead mentally, dead spiritually. Dead morally and otherwise. Integration will not bring a man back from the grave.?

The rediscovery of the speech could be the whole story. But Burnley found the young students in the crowd that night proved to be just as fascinating.

Malcolm X was prompted to come to Brown by an article about the growing Black Muslim movement published in the Brown Daily Herald. The article by Katharine Pierce, a young student at Pembroke College, then the women?s college at Brown, was first written for a religious studies class. It caught the eye of the student paper?s editor, Richard Holbrooke.

Holbrooke would become a leading American diplomat, serving as U.S. Ambassador to Germany soon after that nation?s reunification, ambassador to the United Nations and President Obama?s special adviser on Pakistan and Afghanistan before his death in 2010 at age 69.

But in 1961 Holbrooke was 20, and eager to use the student newspaper to examine race relations - an unusual interest on an Ivy League campus with only a handful of black students.

Pierce?s article ran in the newspaper?s magazine and made her the first woman whose name was featured on the newspaper?s masthead.

Somehow, the article made its way to Malcolm X. His staff and Holbrooke worked out details of the visit weeks in advance. Campus officials were wary: Malcolm X had been banned from the University of California-Berkeley and Queens College in New York.

Tickets - 50 cents - for the Brown speech sold quickly. About 800 people filled the venue, the 19th-century, Romanesque Sayles Hall, meant to hold about 500.

Pierce introduced Malcolm X and recalls him vividly.

?He came surrounded by a security detail,? she recalls. ?You got the sense - this is an important person. He was handsome, absolutely charismatic. I was just bewildered that my class paper could have led to something like this.?
