Dominic Monaghan had some heated words for his former "Lost" co-star Matthew Fox on Twitter over the weekend. It all stemmed from a fan asking Monaghan to persuade Fox to tweet more.

"He beats women. No thanks," he told the fan, @omggbeccaa.

Monaghan was seemingly referring to an allegation by a female Cleveland party-bus driver who filed a personal-injury suit against Fox last year after he allegedly punched her in the groin when she refused to take him back to his hotel. Prosecutors never filed charges against the actor, and Fox has since countersued the woman for defamation.

After Monaghan's initial tweet to her, the fan responded, "I KNOW IT WAS WRONG BUT WHAT?! WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE GOOD TIMES YOU HAD TOGETHER?!"

He tweeted back, "How do you know we ever did?you don't know either of us.he beats women.not isolated incidents.often.not interested."

Regarding the Cleveland woman's claim against Fox, the actor added, "An accusation is when you'claim' someone did something wrong.i know.but hey little fan girl maybe want to get slapped around by him? Daddy issues? Blinded by the nice haircut? It's never okay. Maybe you have lower standards."

As the heated conversation came to an end, the fan responded, "Sorry about the matthew fox thing stay awesome," before she began receiving threats from people who accused her of condoning abuse. "To clear things up- when i wrote that tweet i had no idea it would get that kind of a response from dom.. after that tweet, i wrote back without even thinking- in that moment i was just diassapointed- so for those of you who are saying that i think it is okay to 'beat women' you are wrong, so please stop with the hate tweets," she wrote. "i respect doms opinion, just not the way he handled the response."

According to TMZ, since the exchange went down over the weekend, a source close to Fox said he has never beaten a woman, despite Monaghan's Twitter allegations. The source added that the actors haven't spoken in years and never had any huge arguments that would lead to Monaghan's Twitter tirade. Fox's rep has yet to comment.

In 2010, Monaghan portrayed an abusive boyfriend in Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" video alongside Megan Fox.

"I think we tried as hard as we could to not glorify the violence, to try and explain that this was a relationship that is by no means ideal and a relationship that probably should have ended a lot sooner than it did," Monaghan told MTV News in 2011 about his role in the controversial clip.

U.S. jobs growth seen picking up in May

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employment growth likely regained some momentum in May as weather-related distortions that had held back hiring began to fade, suggesting the economy's moderate recovery is still on track.

Employers are expected to have added 150,000 new workers to their payrolls, according to a Reuters survey of economists, after creating a meager 115,000 new positions in April, the fewest in six months.

That would bring non-farm employment growth closer to its 176,000 a month average of the past three months and offer assurance the U.S. economy remains on a steady growth path even though China is slowing and some European economies are back in recession.

"There were weather and timing effects that hit the April number, but things are coming back to normal," said Gus Faucher, senior economist at PNC Financial Services Group in Pittsburgh.

"Right now the underlying job growth in the U.S. is somewhere between 175,000 and 200,000 per month. That is an economy that is doing good, but not great."

Unseasonably warm winter weather is believed to have brought forward hiring between December and February, especially in the construction and retail sectors. Those gains unwound in March and April, causing a step back in the labor market's recovery. An early Easter also weighed on April's payrolls count.

The Labor Department will release jobs figures for May at 8:30 a.m. (1230 GMT) on Friday.

Should the report meet expectations, that could allow the Federal Reserve to save its ammunition, in the event clear signs of trouble emerge later - either from Europe's worsening debt crisis or the so-called fiscal cliff at home.

Minutes of the U.S. central bank's last policy meeting showed officials less enthusiastic about launching a third round of asset purchases to drive interest rates down further. The Fed has held overnight rates near zero since late 2008 and has bought $2.3 trillion in bonds to try to spur stronger growth.

Still, a strong jobs report would do little to ease pressure on President Barack Obama, who faces a tough re-election vote in November. The employment level is still 5 million jobs below what it was in December 2007, when the recession started.

Analysts say the economy needs to create roughly 125,000 jobs a month to keep the unemployment rate steady. The jobless rate, which has dropped by 1 percentage point since August, is expected to hold steady at a three-year low of 8.1 percent in May.

DISCOURAGED JOB-SEEKERS

The drop in the unemployment rate in April was due to people abandoning the search, and there is a risk that more discouraged job-seekers joining their ranks could push the unemployment rate down again in May.

Added to that is the fact that more long-term unemployed Americans are dropping off benefits rolls. According to the National Employment Law Project, about 236,300 people lost eligibility for extended long-term benefits in eight states in May. That compares with 133,900 in April.

"Some people will drop out of the labor force, but it also creates a more immediate incentive to find work. Both help to push down the unemployment rate," said Sam Coffin, an economist at UBS in Stamford, Connecticut.

Economists will keep an eye on the labor force participation rate - the share of working-age Americans who either have a job or are looking for one - after it dropped to a 30-year low in April.

A small bounce back is expected in May as a large class of graduates enters the labor market. Economists will also watch out for revisions to the prior months' payrolls numbers.

"Employment gains have ultimately been revised higher in each of the past eight months, by an average of 47,000," said Peter Newland, a senior economist at Barclays in New York.

"A similar-sized revision to April would mark six consecutive months of above-150,000 job growth, modest in comparison to previous recoveries from deep recessions, but more than sufficient to push the unemployment rate lower."

The private sector is expected to account for all the job gains in May, adding 160,000 new positions. Government payrolls are seen dropping by 10,000, dragged down by ongoing belt-tightening by local governments.

Construction employment is expected to rebound in May after declining in the prior three months, driven by an increase in residential construction.

Manufacturing, the recovery's star performer, is expected to show another month of gains. However, the pace of activity is cooling and regional Fed manufacturing surveys have shown mixed readings of factory employment in May.

An improvement is seen in leisure and hospitality payrolls after they slipped in April.

In light of the high unemployment rate, average hourly earnings are seen rising a slight 0.2 percent.

With hours in most industries back to their pre-recession levels, the average workweek is seen steady at 34.5 hours. It has barely budged from this level since December.

UBS' Coffin said businesses had largely run out of room to increase worker productivity and were being forced to step up hiring.

LONDON (AP) ? A British priest has apologized for some unholy language on his Facebook page, his bishop says.

Canon Paul Shackerley, Vicar of the Minster Church of St. George in Doncaster in northern England, raised eyebrows by using the f--- word and remarking that "alas, I have religion tomorrow" in some Saturday evening postings.

Peter Burrows, the bishop of Doncaster, met with Shackerley on Friday and later said the priest regretted the inappropriate language and had removed it.

"Whilst meant in a jocular sense, he recognizes that some of the language was unfitting. He has apologized unreservedly," Burrows said in a statement posted on the diocesan website. "I have received Paul's letter of apology and have been assured that this will not happen again."

Stories of priestly waywardness are a favorite subject of British newspapers, and the comments drew attention far and wide. With facial piercings and one piercing in his tongue, Shackerley cuts an unconventional figure.

Church officials were alerted to his Facebook comments by an anonymous letter.

In the first of his Saturday night musings, Shackerley said: "I think I will put my feet up. I've done f--- all today other than jazz lesson and visit a friend. I hear the fizz of tonic in my gin beckoning.

"Alas, I have religion tomorrow. At least I'm not preaching this week."

And oh dear! "Sin is such fun," he said.

It was perhaps less alarming than Shackerley's comment about a photo of himself with a snowman.

"Forgive my sin of frivolity. Sin is such fun! But I haven't been having an inappropriate relationship with Snowy, who can longer be called a 'snowman' in the name of political correctness," Shackerley wrote.

The chatty priest also ruminated last month about the dangers of sites such as Facebook.

"I have known employees (to) receive disciplinary and dismissal notices for inappropriate postings," he wrote.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Even robots like to have fun. NASA's rover on Mars showed off its playful side by snapping a picture of its own shadow. It's the latest self-portrait since the rover, named Opportunity, landed on the red planet in 2004.

The photo was taken in March and NASA released it this week. The solar-powered, six-wheel rover was at an outcrop on the rim of a massive crater. The late afternoon sun set the crater aglow and Opportunity waited for just the right lighting to send a postcard back to Earth.

The result was a dramatic view of Opportunity casting a shadow with the crater in the background.

After nearly five months in one spot, the tireless rover is rolling again to explore more rocks.

Its twin, Spirit, stopped communicating in 2010.

Updated at 6:14 p.m. ET: Police tactical officers stormed into an office building in Valparaiso, Ind., late Friday afternoon?shortly after a gunman released the last of his several hostages and then shot himself twice in the head.

Two gunshots were heard, and tactical officers ran into the building through a shattered window. An ambulance then drove up to the building, and a cheer went up from the crowd gathered outside as someone was brought out on a stetcher.

Valparaiso police said the?gunman, who wasn't immediately identified, was taken from the scene with critical injuries.

It was a quick resolution to a tense situation that had played out slowly for much of the day. The gunman had slowly released his hostages over six hours before freeing his final two captives late in the afternoon, Valparaiso police Sgt. Mike Grennes said.

Neither of the last two hostages was injured, authorities said. Earlier, a woman was freed and was treated at a hospital for a blunt force head wound, and a second woman was driven away in an ambulance after walking free. Grennes said the woman with the head injury may have been struck by the gunman.

The man showed up about 11 a.m. ET at the offices of 21st Century Real Estate in the Prudential office building in Valparaiso, which is just south of Chicago. Fewer than 10 people were believed to have been inside when the gunman arrived.

Grennes corroborated witnesses' accounts that the man asked for a particular agent who he said owed him some money.

The office controller, Carolyn Biesen, told The Times of Northwest Indiana, a local newspaper, that she stepped out of her office to find a man standing over an injured female co-worker.

The man had a gun, but "he did not point it at me," Biesen said. "He pointed it up, showing us he had a gun."

Biesen said she heard the man fire two shots after she fled back to her office and later heard a series of shots believed to have been fired by police.

Grennes confirmed that there was an exchange of gunfire when officers first arrived on the scene.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Band members' statements to investigators that a Florida A & M University drum major willingly got on a bus where he endured a beating with drumsticks, mallets and fists help explain why the nearly dozen defendants charged in his death face felony hazing counts and not more severe charges such as manslaughter and second-degree murder, legal experts say.

Interviews with defendants in Robert Champion's killing and other band members released Wednesday paint the most detailed picture yet of what happened the night he died last November. They also offer some insight into why Robert Champion, whose parents and friends say he was a vocal opponent of hazing, finally relented and got aboard "Bus C," the band's notorious venue for hazing after its performances during FAMU football games.

Champion was seeking the top position in the famed marching band, leading dozens who had already endured the hazing ritual. The Marching 100 has performed at Super Bowls and presidential inauguration parades, and some felt the leadership position had to be earned.

"It's a respect thing, you know," defendant Jonathan Boyce told detectives. "Well, he was wanting to do it all ... all season."

What awaited him was a punishing scrum in which about 15 people pushed, struck, kicked and grabbed at participants as they tried to wade down the aisle from the bus's driver seat to touch the back wall, according to the interviews. One witness said bigger band members waited at the back to make the final few steps the most difficult. Several others who went through it said the ordeal leaves participants dizzy and breathless at a minimum.

After finishing the ordeal, Champion vomited and complained of trouble breathing. He soon fell unconscious and couldn't be revived. An autopsy concluded Champion suffered blunt trauma blows to his body and died from shock caused by severe bleeding.

Thirteen band members have been charged with causing Champion's death on Nov. 19. Eleven defendants face a count of third-degree felony hazing, and two others have been charged with misdemeanors. The team has been suspended at least until next year, and its director resigned earlier this month.

"The fact that he voluntarily submitted to it knowing it was a ritual ? obviously he didn't know the outcome ? I think that weighed very heavily on the prosecution's deciding to go to third-degree hazing as opposed to a manslaughter or a second-degree murder charge," said Randy McClain, a defense attorney in the Orlando area.

Defense attorneys likely will use Champion's willingness to board the bus as part of their clients' defense, McClain said.

"If he went on the bus knowing, 'We're going to have this ritual where they punch me,' if he knew that ... basically the defense is going to take the tact, 'Look, he consented to this and just because there is a bad outcome doesn't make it a criminal act,'" McClain said.

Champion's death illustrated how ingrained hazing was in the band, although previous hazing incidents were well-documented at the school in lawsuits and arrests. Two band members received serious kidney injuries during hazing beatings several years ago, and another member suffered a broken thigh bone just weeks before Champion's death.

Still, nobody is forced to endure the hazing on Bus C. It is voluntary, another defendant, Caleb Jackson, told detectives.

"If you go to that bus that's saying that you wanted to do it," Jackson said. "It's not anybody saying, 'Yeah you go and come on this bus,' especially with it being a drum major and a strong mind .... If you came to the bus they mean you made up in your mind that's what you wanted to do."

Champion's parents, Pam and Robert Sr., said they are having a hard time believing their son volunteered to be hazed. They had hoped for more serious charges against the defendants.

"He was murdered on that bus, and no one signs up for that," Pam Champion said in Atlanta.

After performing at the season's final football game against rival Bethune-Cookman University on Nov. 19, Champion rode in a stretch limo with band director Julian White and other drum majors back to their Orlando hotel.

Even though band members are required to sign a pledge promising not to participate in hazing, initiations were planned that night for Champion and two other band members aboard Bus C. Along with "crossing over," the bus was also known for "the hot seat," which involved getting kicked and beaten with drumsticks and bass drum mallets while covered with a blanket.

Boyce, who was back at a hotel room, said that people on the bus were sending him texts to ask if Champion was going to participate. Boyce said Champion told him he intended to go through with it.

Ryan Dean, a drummer who rode on Bus C regularly, said he was surprised when Champion told him he planned to participate.

"Earlier that weekend, I talked to him and he said 'I will see you guys on the bus.' I was going, like, 'Why?'" said Dean, who is a defendant. "He said it so nonchalantly, I thought that was weird and out of character for him because he never approved of anything like that."

Dean, who said he had been hazed previously, said there was pressure to submit.

"If you want to be somebody, you do it," Dean said.

Drum major Keon Hollis, who was hazed immediately before Champion, said the bus usually carried the percussion section, whose respect is considered crucial because it's the largest. Hollis said he was kicked, punched and struck with straps. Another band member, Lissette Sanchez, also was hazed before Champion.

Boyce said he was in a female band member's hotel room when someone called to say Champion was on the bus. By the time Boyce got there, Champion was in the back, getting kicked and punched, said Boyce. He said he and another defendant, Shawn Turner, tried to shield Champion from the blows and pull him to the back of the bus to end the ritual quickly.

Champion seemed fine immediately afterward, Hollis said, only saying he was thirsty. Hollis said he gave Champion something to drink.

Soon after, Champion began panicking, saying he couldn't breathe or see, even though his eyes were wide open, Boyce said.

Champion collapsed and later died.
