Blood Money Movie Review | Entertainment | Know your city

Director: Vishal Mahadkar

Cast: Kunal Khemu, Amrita Puri

burrp! Says: **1/2

Bollywood believes in formulas and the Bhatts just swear by them. So if it?s a film from the Bhatt camp, you can safely assume that they are presenting a tried and tested story.

Blood Money hardly has anything that you would not expect. Just 30 minutes into the film and you will be able to predict the end. The film sticks to the formula so much that it actually forgets that the audience is expecting something unexpected. The film just plays it very safe.

The story-line of Blood Money is Shah Rukh Khan?s Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman re-loaded and remixed. It?s the same story adapted (without permission we are sure) and presented in a different backdrop.

Kunal Khemu plays a wide-eyed Indian called Kunal Kadam who has landed in Cape Town (South Africa) for the first time to work for a diamond trading company. He soon manages to catch the eye of his boss with his selling skills. The boss tells him that that his willingness to succeed and the fire in his belly remind him of his early days when he was struggling to set up his business in Cape Town. Sounding similar to Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman? Well?

Apart from being predictable, the film moves at a very slow pace. Kunal slowly gets entangled into the web of his boss? business which includes a lot of underhand dealings. These dealings soon assume larger proportions when Kunal discovers that his boss strikes business with criminals and terrorists too. From that time on, it is just a matter of ?slow time? when Kunal would declare war on his boss. Obviously, he did and that?s the climax of the film.

Yes, of course there?s some personal drama in the film. But it is more like what you would see in a TV serial these days. Remember how Shah Rukh Khan ?almost? strayed with Amrita Singh and Juhi Chawla almost left him when she discovered it? Ditto with Kunal. His wife (played by Amrita Puri) discovers that he has cheated on her with Mia Udeya. The tension between Kunal and Amrita peaks when Kunal is going through his worst in office. Of course, everything gets better as Kunal begins to triumph again. We are not giving the entire storyline out because that is the only unexpected twist that the film is perhaps banking on.

Kunal tries very hard to do a decent job and manages it in the end. Amrita Puri didn?t have much to do ? she just had to be either very happy or very sad, which she barely managed. Mia Udeya only had a few anglicised dialogues in the film and she failed to deliver even that. But one thing that was expected of her ? get into a skimpy bikini with the camera lovingly caressing her shapely thighs ? she has carried off the bikini scene with ease.

Every film has some obvious flaws that you cannot miss even if you shut your eyes. In this film, it is Kunal?s ever changing hair-style. If he has, long locks in one shot, he has a short crop in another one. Obviously this film took a long time to shoot and Kunal kept on changing his hair-style through the shooting. One wonders how this escaped Vishal Mahadkar?s attention. The curious case of Kunal Khemu?s hair will definitely not miss you even if you try to miss it.

In the end, the film is a traditional fare for which you don?t need to twitch any of your brain muscles. It is just what it is supposed to be: a no-brainer Bollywood film that tells you a simple, straight-forward story. It?s not a good film but it?s not very bad either.

Watch it this weekend. It tells a story that you have already liked before.

Moving Made Simple: Tips to Help You Relocate

March 16, 2012 ? Realty Times Feature Article by Phoebe Chongchua

It?s the least favorite thing for many sellers, packing up their homes and relocating to a new home or even a new state.

Most people associate moving with stress but it doesn?t have to take the thrill of moving into a new home away. Preparation and careful planning can not only ward off the stress but also save you money.

Here are some quick tips to help you move out of your old home and into your new one with ease and comfort.

Get organized. Moves are often a chaotic mess. Very often the sale goes through and sellers scramble to get their belongings packed up and loaded into the trucks. Then when they get to their new home, there isn?t a trace of organization.

Boxes that were hurriedly jammed with stuff are in disarray and unpacking them seems like more work than it?s worth. This is often how people end up with duplicate irons, toasters, coffeemakers. In their frustration of being unable to locate a necessary item from the boxes, some opt to just purchase another.

Instead, color-code the boxes and mark in bold pen their contents. Start with one room and fill the box with only items from that room, for instance, the kitchen. Then, even if the box isn?t stuffed, move to another room and use a new color-coded box to fill with its belongings.

If you?re using movers, give them instructions to place the color-coded and marked boxes in the appropriate rooms. This saves so much time, energy, and hassle when unpacking or searching for items for that particular room.

It may seem like a lot of work to do this in the beginning, but unpacking and moving boxes that you have no idea what?s inside, is far worse and a much longer process.

Sell what you don?t need.

A common mistake sellers make in moving is to bring with them the stuff that they plan to get rid of in the future. If you?re using professional movers, this will cost you more. If you?re doing it yourself, it?s just plain silly to haul that which you intend to get rid of into a new home.

Again, this requires some planning. But you know that you?re selling your home, so start going through the rooms and setting up piles of the items that you plan to get rid of. Garage sales can help you unload some unwanted materials quickly. Also, sites like eBay or even shops that place your items on consignment can be worth it. Then, of course, you can simply make a deduction to a non-profit charity and just take the tax deduction.

The main point here is to use the move to unload the clutter. Do this before you list your home and your real estate agent will thank you. Clearing out the stuff helps buyers see the real beauty and value of your home. And, when it comes time to move, you?ll be glad you?re not simply taking unwanted stuff over to clutter your new home.

Appliance handling tips. If you?re moving big appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers, be sure to wipe them down and clean them out carefully. These items can get very smelly in the move. If you use a damp cloth and vinegar, it can help keep the refrigerator smelling fresh. Make sure you dry the inside completely before moving the refrigerator.

Moving mirrors? Be sure to tape them in a criss-cross pattern. So, if the mirror should break, it will be easier to clean up. Do not place anything breakable in your drawers. Even if you think, it?s in the sweater drawer, so it should be okay. Don?t risk it. Instead, pack breakables with delicate items in the appropriate packaging material and mark the box fragile.

Have what you absolutely need handy. Create a basket or bin and folder to hold important papers. The bin will house the items that you need with you at all times. It is super easy to lose sight of the things that matter most during a move. This is when you frantically are looking for your daily medicine, your necessary paperwork or the health records for boarding your pets.

Meticulous planning will make your move smooth so that you can enjoy your new home and not spending hours or even days searching for misplaced items.

Florence Welch Inspired By Evil Queen Ravenna For 'Snow White' Track

Welch says she got a lot of material for 'Breath of Life' from Charlize Theron's beautifully wicked character.
By James Montgomery

When Florence Welch was asked to write a song for the upcoming "Snow White and the Huntsman" soundtrack, she was given the opportunity to watch a select few scenes from the film itself ... and almost automatically, she found herself drawing inspiration from a rather unlikely source: Namely, Charlize Theron's wicked Queen Ravenna.

"The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside. She's sort of eternal, but inside there's nothing. She's kind of like charcoal or something," Welch told MTV News on Thursday (March 29). "[There are] these amazing scenes where she's kind of picking out birds' hearts and eating them. [She has] this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she's so beautiful, so it's this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death."

So, in a bit of a, uh, non-traditional move, Welch ended up writing a song called "Breath of Life," which is sung very much from the perspective of the Queen herself ("I got a lot of material from her!" she laughed. "Beauty, death, life ... it was pushing all of my buttons.") So you can imagine her surprise when, after submitting the song, she found herself sitting in London's Abbey Road studio, watching it all come together under the care of famed composer James Newton Howard.

"We went in and demoed the track, these big, clattering drums, huge bass sounds and everything was very intense ... and then we sent that to the guys in L.A. who composed it. And it was amazing to see the music we played being turned into this amazing orchestral thing," Welch laughed. "You feel in a bit of a way like you're kind of making it up as you go along, and then when you see it done, laid out before you in such a beautiful, orchestral fashion, it's really incredible. And then we all went into Abbey Road and it was one of the best days of my life; I love choirs and I love choral music, and there was a 60-piece choir singing the vocal parts that I had written. When the baritones came in, I nearly wept, it was so emotional."

And thanks to all that, in a still-growing career that's seemingly one highlight after the next, Welch said that writing and recording "Breath" was perhaps her favorite moment to date. Even if the whole 60-member choir thing did give her management team palpitations.

"My manager was looking at me going 'Do not get used to this. We cannot afford this 60-piece choir!' " she laughed. "It was just wonderful. Me and Isa [Summers, Welch's Machine partner, and co-writer of the track] were in there, these young women who made music for love, but with not much money or much reason. ... It was a really proud day for us. And, musically, for the composers at Universal to have understood the song and see it played out so beautifully, it was an amazing day. We felt a bit proper."

Who else do you hope to hear on the "Snow White and the Huntsman" soundtrack? Leave your pick in the comments section below!

Fossils show signs of earliest burrowing

Ancient diggers may have stirred up evolutionary forces

Web edition : Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Worms may have first burrowed into mud more than 550 million years ago. The tunnels they apparently created, preserved in fossilized sediments and reported in a new study, could be the oldest example of animals significantly churning up the ground.

That newly plowed seafloor in turn might have helped to spur the rise of new kinds of macroscopic life late in the Ediacaran period ? just before the Cambrian explosion produced most of the major animal groups around today.

?We think that Ediacaran organisms diversified as a reaction to habitat remodeling by ? burrowing,? says Dima Grazhdankin, a paleontologist at the A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics in Novosibirsk, Russia, and coauthor of a new paper published online March 19 in Geology.

Grazhdankin and colleagues found the fossils in central Siberia, in uplifted rock that had once been mud deep underwater. Tiny, crescent-shaped traces cutting through 5 centimeters of former sediment looked like small tunnels made by creatures scooping and flinging dirt from front to back.

Only a creature with bilateral symmetry ? not just a front and back, but a top and bottom as well ? could have made such a pattern, says Grazhdankin. Previous evidence of bilaterians this early in the fossil record has proved controversial. Still, he credits a primitive worm.

Digging could have helped the worm find food, as well as open up new living spaces for other creatures. Mud that?s been churned up, or bioturbated, would be softer, freed of the stiff microbial mat that covered much of the seafloor at the time. The softer mud would be easier to colonize, possibly helping to explain why macroscopic life spread and became more diverse late in the Ediacaran.

Shuhai Xiao, a paleontologist at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, says the appearance of bioturbation so early could even have had a planetwide impact. Churning up seafloor sediments could have helped to recycle carbon and sulfur in the sediments back into the ocean, for instance, changing seawater chemistry and even oxygen levels in the atmosphere.

?If these fossils do represent evidence for bioturbation, they would have important implications for early animal evolution and its impact on the Earth system,? he says.

But Xiao still needs some convincing. Since none of the densely packed traces in the rock crisscross, he wonders whether the patterns are burrows at all ? or simply the imprint of a creature that died an inglorious death in the mud.

Local artists from Phu Tho, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Thua Thien-Hue also showcased their works, focusing on the unique features of different regions in the S-shaped country.

VN?s biggest conical hat recognized

A 30kg conical hat was recognized as the biggest of its kind by the Vietnam Records Book on March 24.

Made of more than 960 palm leaves layered together on a bamboo frame, the 1.6m tall hat with a diameter of 2.74m, took 40 days of hard work by the artisan Thai Do and his 10 partners in the central city of Hue to finish.

The artisans also embedded poems and images featuring the beauty of the ancient city of Hue like the Huong River, Thien Mu Pagoda and Truong Tien Bridge, between the layers of the leaves. The decorations are revealed when the hat is placed under a light.

The hat is now displayed at Non La Restaurant at 19 Ngueyn Dinh Chieu Street in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnamese film attracts French audiences

The movie ?Chuyen cua Pao? (Pao?s Story) was screened in Paris on March 24 during the second Francophone film festival, transporting French audiences to beautiful scenery and presenting the daily lives of the Mong ethnic group in northwestern Vietnam.

The audience included overseas Vietnamese, French friends, and international friends from International Francophone Organization (OIF) member countries.

Helene, a Greek student studying in Paris, said she found the film very interesting.

Ambassador Duong Van Quang, Chief of the Vietnamese Mission to UNESCO, said Vietnam aims to deepen its ties with the OIF and its member countries through boosting the teaching of the French language in Vietnam.

Quang stressed that culture and language cooperation is the ?backbone? of the OIF, and Vietnam is stepping up economic cooperation with member countries.

On International Francophone Day in France, two Vietnamese students also won prizes at a French language contest held by the OIF and the International Francophone Press Union.

Vietnam?s Got Talent causes Youtube debate

Several contestants on Vietnam?s Got Talent have not only impressed audiences with their covers of world famous songs, but have also created an army of fans who are willing to spend days arguing with each other to protect their idols.

In the third semi-final night of the show, broadcast on March 18, a contestant named Dinh Ngoc Hoang performed a cover of the song ?She?s Gone,? by the US?s famed rock band Steelheart. Hoang amazed the contest?s jury and audiences watching the show with his strong voice.

However, instead of simply voting for him to win the contest, fans seemed to be overexcited with the performance and found extreme ways to debate on Youtube and express their admiration for Hoang.

The fight started when a netizen nicknamed woojin128 commented on to the music video ?She?s Gone? by Steelheart that ?I came here because of Dinh Ngoc Hoang.? Since then a large number of Vietnamese fans have flocked to the video sharing site to express their agreement with the comment.

?Dinh Ngoc Hoang isn?t Steelheart, but Vietnamese know about Steelheart after watching Hoang?s cover in Vietnam?s Got Talent,? user thanhtuc said.

Some people added fuel to the fire by saying that Steelheart has to say thanks to Hoang since he brought more viewers to the clips, comments that infuriated many fans who idolize the band.

?Seriously, I feel disgrace for people who know about this wonderful song after hearing a weak copy version and thought that is better than the original,? a netizen nicknamed LeeOnMaiden responded.

It wasn?t only Youtube users from other countries who were annoyed. Even many Vietnamese fans also disagreed that Hoang?s cover made the song famous in Vietnam.

?Hey guys, I?m a 24-year-old Vietnamese girl and I started listening to ?She?s Gone? by Steelheart in the 7th grade. That means I?ve known about the band for around 10 years and I?m pretty sure there are many other Vietnamese who have known Steelheart since their childhood. So stop saying that people know ?She?s Gone? thanks to Hoang,? user winterstone said.

?Thank God! I?m Vietnamese and I know this song NOT because of Hoang? luppintd humorously commented.

Many comments saying the cover was better than the original only made things worse. In responding to comments, other people said that it?s silly to compare the two versions.

?Please don?t compare Hoang with Mike (Steelheart?s singer). I listened to him and it was a very good performance but comparing him with Mike is just silly,? filipmajstorovic said.

?We can?t compare Dinh Ngoc Hoang with a legend like Mike. Hoang is also a fan of Steelheart and he tried to sing his favorite song,? tnpa11 added.

?She?s Gone? is not the only cause for debate between music fans after the most recent airing of Vietnam?s Got Talent. Earlier, when Westlife?s ?Home? and ?You Raised Me Up?, as well as Miley Cyrus?s ?Let?s Dance?, were sung on stage, the original and cover performances were also compared.

In staying out of the battles, some fans explained that the reason behind the meaningless debates is that people got over excited after seeing talented singers at a time when the local music industry is filled with ?music disasters? and untalented singers who lip-sync on stage.

?Some people are making a big deal out of it. Our music industry is really a mess right now. So when someone makes covers of big songs by famous artists, they will go crazy,? akatsuki2923 expressed.

Some people tried to ease the fight by saying each version is good in its own way.

?Why do we have to make a comparison? Everyone has his own special things. I like both of them,? NoveKute said.

Pianist Bich Tra explores work of Swedish composer

Overseas Vietnamese pianist Nguyen Bich Tra has released a new CD featuring the works of Swedish composer Joachim Raff. The CD was released by the Naxos Group?s Grand Piano label, dedicated to the exploration of undiscovered repertoire for piano.

?I?ve always remembered my first impressions when I read the compositions of Joachim Raff in a library in UK long time ago,? said Tra. ?It was a music full of sunshine, and full of joy and beauty. This CD is like an interesting itinerary to explore and restore Raff?s magic sound once again.?

Tra, 38, graduated from the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory in 1997 and completed an advanced performance course at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1999, continuing her studies for master?s degree at the College of Music and Media. Living in Britain, she has toured worldwide and recorded six albums.-

Restored Hue palace opens for public

A project to restore Long An Palace, one of the most beautiful structures in the world heritage site ? the imperial city of Hue, was inaugurated on March 25 after three years of restoration.

Following the inauguration ceremony, Long An Palace is now open to public, featuring a display of 424 outstanding artifacts relating to royal life during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945).

Long An Palace was built under the time of King Thieu Tri (1841-1847). It consists of seven compartments and two annexes plus 128 pillars made of precious timbers. The entire wooden parts are carved with beautiful scenes, the four sacred animals (dragon, lion, tortoise and phoenix) and more than 1,000 poems in Chinese scripts.

In 1847, when King Thieu Tri passed away, his body was kept here for eight years before burial and the palace then became a worship site for the king, until the French colonialists occupied the country in 1885. In 1908, Long An Palace was used as a library for the Quoc Tu Giam School and became Khai Dinh Museum in 1923.

Located on an area of 6,330m², Long An Palace now displays more than 10,000 artifacts relating to the life during the Nguyen Dynasty which were previously showcased at the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum.

Water puppetry wows Cuban audiences

Audiences in Havana have been mesmerised by Vietnamese water puppetry, performed in the country for the first time.

At the invitation of the Cuban Ministry of Culture, a troupe of 12 artists from the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre participated at the Havana Puppetry Festival from Friday to Sunday.

The unique water puppetry shows focused on Vietnamese farming life such as dragon dances, buffalo fighting, fishing and rice harvesting, narrated by a comic puppet named Teu.

?The performances not only helped Cubans learn more about Vietnamese culture, but also strengthened the special friendship between the two countries,? said Vietnamese Ambassador Vu Chi Cong.

?Through the puppets, the Vietnamese people send a message of peace, prosperity and happiness.?

Fernando Rojas, deputy minister of the Cuban Culture Ministry, said his people had long dreamed of enjoying the over-thousand-year-old Vietnamese tradition.

He agreed with Cong that the performances proved Viet Nam and Cuba?s co-operative friendship in different fields.

With tickets for the planned six performances sold out one week prior to the festival, two more shows were added due to popular demand.

Tran Quoc Chiem, deputy director of the Ha Noi Culture, Sports and Tourism Department, who led the troupe to Cuba, said he was extremely impressed by their response in the country, in which more shows will definitely be held in future.

Founded in 1969, the capital?s famous Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre has brought the Vietnamese art form to many countries around the world.

Tickets to watch Da Nang fireworks won?t exceed $15: organizer

More than 40,000 tickets worth up to VND300,000 (US$15) to watch fireworks by the Han River in the central coastal city of Da Nang on April 29-30 have been issued, according to organizers at the Da Nang International Fireworks Competition.

Three fourths of the tickets will be sold to tourists, while the rest remain as invitations. Prices ranges from VND200,000 (US$10) to VND300,000 (US$15), and tickets can be purchased at booths set up by the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and at some travel agencies.

Tourists can also get on a boat to travel along the Han River and watch the fireworks at the same time. However, boat owners are not allowed to charge more than VND300,000 per person.

The annual Da Nang International Fireworks competition to celebrate Reunification Day will take place on April 29-30, featuring five teams from Canada, China, France, Italy and Vietnam.

Besides the two sparkling fireworks nights, there will be other events like street music performances, fashion shows and a cuisine corner.

The Da Nang Department Of Industry and Trade has sent a document demanding that organizations, restaurants and hotels in the city put up fixed prices at their reception desks during the event. The department also announced hotlines for tourists to contact in case of rip-offs.

Previously, police from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism gave a penalty of VND10 million (US$500) to two hotels which suddenly raised the room rates, taking advantage of the fireworks event.

Hanoi to host French Opera for kids

Two special performances of the Opera ?The Child and the Spells? (L?Enfant et les Sortil?ges) featuring young artists from the Children?s Choir of the National Musical Theater in Paris will take place in April in Hanoi.

The Child and the Spells: A Lyric Fantasy in Two Parts, with music by Maurice Ravel to a libretto by Colette, will be performed by the theater?s 12 lead singers and 65 choir members, according to a press release from the event organizer L?Espace.

The opera is Ravel?s second work, written from 1917 to 1925, and was first performed in Monte Carlo in 1925 under the baton of Victor de Sabata.

After being offered the opportunity to write a musical work, Colette wrote the text in eight days. Several composers were wanted to write the music, but she only was happy with the prospect of Ravel.

Tickets, priced from VND 200,000 to 550 000, are available at the Hanoi Opera House, 1 Trang Tien Street, where the opera will take place at 8 p.m. on April 18 and 19.

After Brain Injury: The Power of Pets in Rehabilitation | Psychology ...

Want a rehabilitation partner who offers unconditional love, acceptance, and motivation? Get a dog! Highly trained assistance, therapy, and service dogs have been in the news as companions for wounded service members, autistic children, and disabled adults. Melissa Fay Greene's powerful story, "Wonder Dog," in The New York Times followed the Winokur family as they integrated Chancer the golden retriever into their family to help their son Iyal. Chancer was custom trained by the wonderful nonprofit corporation 4 Paws for Ability to attach to Iyal and help him reduce the fearsome rages that resulted from fetal alcohol syndrome.

Therapy dogs help wounded service members stick with occupational therapy, calm the intrusive images of PTSD, and navigate with prosthetic legs.

Family pets have their own valuable role in helping a person recover after brain injury. When my husband Alan suffered a severe anoxic brain injury?following a heart attack and cardiac arrest, our dog Molly became his steadfast rehab partner and constant companion.

Molly the rehab coach
Alan was hospitalized for four months of intensive medical treatment and brain injury rehab. When he came home, he was just starting to regain his abilities to read, write, walk, speak, and remember. He struggled to relearn all the self-care activities we take for granted, including organizing his morning routine, and following through on a task. Apraxia, the inability to perform complex motor movements due to memory loss, made it harder to put clothes on in the right order.

Alan talked to Molly all day. One morning I called upstairs to Alan, "Honey, put your clothes on and come downstairs for breakfast." As I flipped pancakes in the kitchen I heard Alan conferring with Molly.

"Molly, did you hear what Janet just told me to do?" he said. "Well, that's not easy you know. First you have to put on socks and make sure they match. You have to get your shoes on the right feet, but not until your pants are on. And hold the railing so you don't fall down the stairs."

On and on he went, as Molly sat attentively by with her head cocked to hear every word. Alan was right about the complexity of the task. Getting dressed activated several areas?of his brain. The instruction was processed in the parietal lobe and sequenced in the temporal lobe. His working memory kicked in as he sequenced his clothes, and walking down the stairs required motor skills controlled by the cerebellum. By talking to Molly, Alan learned to cue himself. ?They both showed up for breakfast with brains in high gear.

Molly the psychotherapist
Molly was also gave Alan an enormous amount of emotional support. When he felt anxious,?he talked it over with Molly. When I returned from a quick errand, Alan said, "Molly was worried, but? I wasn't. I told her you said you'd be back in 20 minutes. I told her we'd be safe."

A few weeks after Alan came home, he fell into the throes of?post-traumatic stress disorder?? caused by? all of the trauma, pain, and loss he'd experienced. For several nights, Alan sat bolt upright in the bed, hyperventilating and screaming, "They're trying to kill me, they're choking me!" His eyes were as large as saucers, and sweat soaked his body. Alan had been resuscitated for almost one hour, intubated and on a ventilator, and forcibly restrained many times during his early recovery. Now his body and mind were paying for those experiences.

If I had not been a psychiatric RN, I might not have recognized Alan's night terrors as PTSD. Each time it happened, I put the lights on, sat him on the edge of the bed with his feet on the floor, and wrapped my arm around his shoulders. I said gently, "You're OK, Alan. You're safe in our home. I'm here with you. Take a breath. Nothing bad can happen to you." I stroked his back softly until he became oriented and calmed down. An extra dose of anti-anxiety medication helped him get back to sleep.

During this time period, Molly slept at the foot of our bed. One night we were awakened by Molly yipping and flailing around in a dream. I asked, "Alan, do you want me to put Molly on the floor so you can sleep?"

He said, "Oh no! This is what I do for my dog. You watch. Alan lifted Molly on to his lap and stroked her fur, and said, "You're OK, Molly. Daddy's here. Nothing bad is going to happen to you." When Molly was alert and calm, Alan gently moved her to her spot on the bed.

"See, that's how I take care of my dog," he said as he dozed off. By soothing Molly in the same way I soothed him, Alan also learned how to soothe himself. We used several approaches to?treat Alan's PTSD (more in future posts), but Molly was an irreplaceable part of the treatment.

Molly the personal trainer
Molly also featured prominently in Alan's goals. One of the first goals he set was to be able to walk Molly safely by himself. First, we worked on crossing the street to the local park and finding his way home. When he mastered that, he and Molly became walking pals. Each time Alan bent down to fasten her harness, he asked, "Do you trust me, Molly?" Do you feel safe with me?" Her wagging tail signaled assent, so off they went. They both enjoyed the exercise and stimulation of their walks.

Molly contributed to Alan's healing process in multiple ways that only a devoted and intuitive dog could.

NITDroid now available in alpha form, brings Android 4.0.3 to Nokia N9 (video)

Image
It's hardly the first time we've seen Ice Cream Sandwich parading around on a phone that shipped with MeeGo, but for those waiting for a proper, (semi) stable release to try it on their own N9, heads-up. NITDroid forum administration e-yes has laid out alpha release numero uno, dubbed Project Mayhem, which brings Android 4.0.3 to one of the most beautiful pieces of handset hardware to ever exist. As for things "expected" to work? Dual-boot operation without reflashing, 3D drivers, multitouch, USB networking, Bluetooth, charging and a whole host of other niceties. There's a demo after the break for the nonbelievers, and those with plenty of time (and wits) can get to cracking down in the source link.

[Thanks, Bikfalvi]

Set off built-in alcoves or niches by using lovely wallpaper or accent colors. If you?re only painting a small area, consider purchasing sample sizes of paint rather than a full gallon.

An easy way to improve your home is by getting a new mailbox. This can do wonders for curbside appeal. Always check with city regulations before putting up a new mailbox. It only takes a few hours to do something like this.

Radiant heating is inexpensive and easy once you know the correct procedures. Talk to a sales representative if you are putting in floor tile and are thinking about radiant heat. You will be happy that you went ahead and did it; it is wonderful for your feet. When you are ready to sell your home, this will be an attractive feature for potential buyers.

A beautiful doorway can raise the property value on a home by nearly 10 percent! One simple way to update your front entryway is to purchase and install new hardware for your door.

Design your home so that water flows away from it during storms. Damage to the foundation can be costly. You could for instance modifying the slope of your yard for a better evacuation or installing extra gutters.

Make sure to be safe when working on a heavy project. Invest in a good back support, safety goggles, steel-toed shoes, gloves and a helmet.

If you want to spruce up your home in a jiffy, replace the paneling on your walls. Paneling can be relatively inexpensive and adds a new look to your home. Another benefit is that the panels can be removed with little work or damage.

Tired of looking at that old dresser in the bedroom? Why not bring your old furniture back to life by sanding them down and refinishing them. When you refinish old furniture, you get a new look for less money. Old items of furniture can be stained or painted in all sorts of colors.

Anything simple, like a lampshade, can look and be boring. You can spice up your lamp shades by painting them using stencils. You will add instant personality to your room, simply by brightening up your boring lamp shades.

Now you see that home improvement is not just a walk in the park. Every project requires research and an unique set of tools, but you can handle almost anything with preparation. Following the tips below will help you get started.

Power Plants: Could a Rechargeable Battery Be Made from Paper and Pulp By-Products?

Experimenting with plant lignin as a replacement for lithium and other metals, scientists create a rechargeable battery--but much work lies ahead to translate it into a usable power source

Despite decades of predictions that a fully electronic, paperless society is almost upon us, we still live in a world populated with printed documents. This insatiable demand for plant cellulose?based writing and packaging materials may end up having a silver lining: a component for a new type of low-cost, Earth-friendly rechargeable battery.

Researchers Grzegorz Milczarek from Poznan University of Technology in Poland and Olle Ingan?s from Link?ping University in Sweden, have combined a polymer with a waste material from the paper and pulp industry to create a new kind of battery cathode, which today are mostly made from nonrenewable metals such as lithium or cobalt. Specifically, Milczarek and Ingan?s used lignin, an organic substance binding the cells, fibers and vessels that make up wood. Plants are made up of as much as 30 percent lignin, is the second-most abundant renewable carbon source on the planet after cellulose, according to the International Lignin Institute in Switzerland. Each year, paper processing generates between 35 million and 45 million metric tons of a dark waste product known as brown liquor, which is rich in lignin derivatives.

Most batteries consist of electrochemical cells with two electrodes?an anode and a cathode?and are filled with an electrolyte. The aggregate effect of the chemical reactions taking place within the electrolyte creates a flow of electrons between the anode and the cathode, resulting in the discharge of electricity.

Milczarek and Ingan?s combined lignin derivatives with a polymer known as "polypyrrole" to make their test cathodes, which varied in thickness. The insulating qualities of lignin derivatives combined with the conductivity of polypyrrole create a composite material that effectively holds an electric charge, according to the scientists, whose research appears in the March 23 issue of Science.

The inspiration for the research came from the process plants use to convert light energy to stored chemical energy. In photosynthesis, electrochemically active molecules known as quinones transport electrons and protons, Ingan?s explains. Animals also make use of quinones in metabolism, "to build the pH gradient which drives synthesis of ATP, or adenosine triphosphate," he adds. If nature could create such a renewable metabolic process, the professor of biomolecular and organic electronics reasons, why not consider it as the basis for charge storage in a renewable system?

The researchers have much work ahead of them, and Ingan?s cautions that it is premature to compare their prototype battery system with inorganic two-electrode batteries fabricated with metals. "There are many things to do in order to improve the charge density of the electrode, which is what we are doing now," Ingan?s says.

The biggest disadvantage to the proposed approach, however, is that the electrodes lose their charge within hours when they are idle. The researchers hope that different types of lignin derivatives could solve the problem. Given the diversity of plant life on this planet, there is no shortage of samples for the researchers to study.
